3:30–4:45 p.m., 409B, LA Convention Center
Program arranged by the Radical Caucus in English and the Modern Languages
Presiding: John Franklin Crawford, Univ. of New Mexico, Albuquerque
Speakers: Francesco Crocco, Borough of Manhattan Community Coll., City Univ. of New York; Brian Dolinar, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana; Nicholas Hengen, Univ. of Minnesota, Twin Cities; Patricia L. Keeton, Ramapo Coll.; Dennis Lopez, Univ. of California, Irvine; Kamala Platt, Meadowlark Center; Joseph Ramsey, Quincy Coll.
This discussion brings together activists who have been involved in campus-based efforts to contest or protest current cutbacks in funding for public higher education, faculty furloughs and layoffs, class size increases, corporatization of the university, downsizing of humanities programs, privatization of public education, federal and military recruitment on campus, and the creation of new class and race barriers for affected students. What is the role of protest in this crisis of the new decade? Does media coverage matter in the face of expanding social networking? What do the events of the nationwide 4 March demonstrations and later protests suggest about goals and strategies for the future?
