Session Description:

In 1996, Simon Gikandi expressed puzzlement that more was not written about the impact of England's others on England. Indeed, literary studies has been limited by a discomfort with the power of the colonized to affect the colonizer. This session focuses on specific Western texts and African cultures to argue that Africans and African thought actively changed literature in Europe and the Americas.
